For Flag Day 2026, the Solon American Legion Stinocher Post 460 held a flag retirement ceremony on Sunday, June 14, behind the library at 6 p.m.
A flag retirement ceremony is held for the purpose of properly disposing of American flags. Without following the proper procedure, it is considered disrespectful to burn an American flag.
According to Denny Hansen, the Sergeant at Arms for Post 460, the flags cannot be disposed of if they do not fit the qualifications.
“All of the flags are inspected to make sure that they have proper reason for burning,” Hansen said. Such reasons include being worn, tattered, or faded from use.
After the flags had been inspected, members of the Post 460’s Color Guard presented arms, and a prayer was said before the flag was placed over fire.
Once the ceremony had concluded, attendees were invited to stay to visit as their flags from home were burned.
