Deborah “Debbie” Krekel, 77, of Solon, Iowa, passed away on June 3, 2026, at University of Iowa Health Care – Downtown Campus.
Visitation will be held from 2:00–4:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, with a brief service following at 4:00 p.m. A graveside service and interment will be held at Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington, Iowa on Monday, June 8, at 11:00 a.m. Family and friends are invited to join. Debbie was born on October 15, 1948, to William and Helen (Coffin) Hols. She grew up in Farmington, Iowa. Following her graduation from Harmony High School, she attended Northeast Missouri State University, where she earned her teaching degree. She taught third grade before marrying Gene Krekel on December 30, 1972. Together they built a life in Burlington and shared more than 30 years of marriage.
A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Debbie chose to leave the classroom to raise her family. She found her greatest joy cheering on her children and grandchildren at sporting events and activities. She was an avid reader, loyal Iowa Hawkeye and Indiana Fever fan, volunteer for Hope Haven, active member of P.E.O., and never passed up her favorite morning Subway stop.
After Gene’s passing, Debbie moved to Solon to be closer to her daughter, Molly, and her family. For nearly 20 years, she was a constant source of love, encouragement, and support. Whether shopping, sharing a meal, or simply listening, she made everyone feel special. Her home was a place of comfort, laughter, and unconditional support, and the memories she created with her grandchildren will be cherished forever. Her grandchildren lovingly called her “Grammar Grandma” because she always noticed grammar mistakes and wasn’t afraid to point them out. Her grandchildren were truly her pride and joy.
Debbie is survived by her daughter, Molly (Matt) Steinbrech; grandchildren Weston, Julia, Jack, Lane, and Walker Steinbrech; nieces Andrea and Elizabeth Krekel; cousin Bob Millen; and many extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gene, son Erik Krekel, and infant daughter.
While her absence leaves an immeasurable void, her family takes comfort in knowing she has been reunited with Gene, Erik, and her infant daughter, whom she carried in her heart throughout her life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family c/o Molly Steinbrech in Debbie’s memory and will be directed according to the family’s wishes.
