Last Tuesday was a great night for the Spartan boys’ track team, who won their home Denny Gruber Relays with 127 team points.
The biggest story of the night was Mac Svalstad (freshman) breaking the school’s open 400-meter dash record.
“I’m definitely more excited because it’s my coach’s old record, so that’s got me feeling pumped,” Svalstad joked after the meet. The previous record was set in 2010 by the current assistant track coach, Pat Parysz, with a time of 49.10.
“I’m so happy,” Parysz said when asked how he felt on getting dethroned. “I thought he’d break it a couple of weeks ago, but every time now, heading into the Drake Relays, I can’t wait to see him develop it.”
Breaking this record was both of their goals heading into the season.
Svalstad hoped to carry the momentum of this massive win with him as he traveled to Des Moines to compete for the first time at the Drake Relays.
Svalstad headed into Drake with the ninth fastest time in the 400, and the third fastest in the 800.
Other first place winners from the night include Anders Holmes in the 3200m with a time of 10:49.18. Kaden Hoeper and Easton Shipley tying for first at 6 feet in the high jump.
The Girls team also shined on the night, winning with 184 team points.
“I would say positive attitude, the weather is nice, and we finally got to be on the track, and we were all kind of ready” said Solon senior Piper Stahle.
The Girls sent their 4×100 and 4×400 meter relays to compete at drake.
“Really working on handoff’s for the 4×100, fueling ourselves, and positive attitude” said Marin Ashbacker (Sr) on what the keys to success were going into the weekend.
Jerzey Haluska took first in the 400m with 59.47. Falyn Svalstad won the 800m with 2:31.81. Addison Seamans won the 1500m with 5:19.19. Liv Nelson won the 3000 with 12.19.19. Finally Piper Johnson won the discus with 109- 03.00.
