it was a battle of ranked teams as rivals Mount Vernon and Solon squared off on the hardwood Tuesday night (Dec. 16) in game one of a girl-boy varsity doubleheader. The Mustangs entered the Solon gym ranked No. 5 in Class 3A while the Lady Spartans held the No. 12-spot in Class 4A.
Freshman Tenley Levin and senior Delainey Durr put Solon on the scoreboard with a three-pointer from Levin as the Lady Spartans took an early 5-2 lead. It would be Solon’s only lead of the contest however as the Mustangs took a 6-5 lead with just over two minutes left in the first period, winning the quarter 8-5 and leading 25-14 at halftime on their way to a 42-34 win.
Levin, junior Laney Johnson, junior Jerzey Haluska, and junior Laeni Hinkle kept Solon in the game in the second quarter with a three-pointer from Haluska. Levin, who led the Lady Spartans with 14 points on the night, had a seven-point run in the third period with a field goal, two free throws, and a long three-point basket cutting the deficit to six, 27-21. Laney Johnson drained a three-pointer in the period making it 31-26, but still in favor of Mount Vernon.
Johnson had a seven point night for Solon with six from Durr, four from Haluska, and three from Hinkle.
The Mustangs improved to 6-2 overall while the Lady Spartans dipped to 3-2.
