Merriam-Webster defines a “donnybrook” as a free-for-all, a brawl. A donnybrook is also, in Iowa, a three-day wrestling event named in honor of legend Dan Gable. This year’s mayhem on the mats was held, for girls, last Thursday and Friday, Dec. 4 and 5, at the Xtreme Arena in Coralville. In addition to many of the best wrestlers in the state, competitors traveled from Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, and Wisconsin for the 47-team event.

The Lady Spartans finished 29th in team points with 108 led by junior Tess Richards (10-4), who placed tenth at 120 lbs. Kali Poe (12-7), a freshman, placed 11th at 115 lbs., senior Adlie Miller (5-8) was 12th at 190 lbs., freshman Kendall Koss (3-4) was 14th at 145 lbs., senior Alexis Anderson (9-6) was 15th at 155 lbs. and freshman Faith Jeffers (7-9) was 15th at 170 lbs. Freshman Brilee Moeller (7-9) placed 21st at 135 lbs., Peyton Gordon (10-7) was 23rd at 125 lbs., and junior Evie Gasser (3-11) placed 24th at 140 lbs.
