INDEPENDENCE — The varsity Lady Spartans clinched the WaMaC East Championship, their first since 2012, Tuesday, October 7 with a 3-0 sweep of the Independence Mustangs.
Solon held off the Mustangs 25-21 in the first set before cruising to a 25-11 second set win and a dominating 25-9 performance in the third set.
Senior Jozie Lahr hit a career milestone with her 300th block in the match. Lahr had nine kills and one solo block (with a pair of block assists) against Independence with 13 solo and 85 assists this season.
Kiley Devery, a senior, led Solon’s offense with 11 kills, freshman Amelia Guinn had eight, freshman Makinley Galvan and junior Avery Kellen made five each with four from senior Gable Knight. Devery had a pair of solo blocks with one apiece from Guinn and Knight. Seniors Kennedey Whitford and Cydney Jaster, with junior Scarlett Ferin, had two ace serves each with one from sophomore Reese Hahn, Lahr, and Devery.
Solon goes 3-1 at CPU tourney Saturday, October 11
Solon 2 Columbus Catholic 0 – Freshman Ameila Guinn led with seven kills as the Lady Spartans opened CPU’s tournament with a 2-0 (21-11, 21-14) sweep. Jozie Lahr made five kills with four apiece by Kiley Devery and Avery Kellen and one each by Makinley Galvin, Addison Walter, Beckett Kruse, and Scarlett Ferin.
Regina Catholic 2 Solon 1 – Regina’s Reese Naeve, a senior, led all with 18 kills as the Regals overcame a 15-21 first set loss to outlast Solon 21-19 and 18-16. Kiley Devery led Solon with nine kills, Jozie Lahr made seven, Amelia Guinn had six, Makinley Galvan produced three, Gable Knight made two and Cydney Jaster had one.
Solon 2 Prairie, Cedar Rapids 0 – Jozie Lahr led Solon with seven kills as the Lady Spartans held off Prairie 23-21 and 21-16. Makinley Galvan made five kills with four by Addison Walter, two from Amelia Guinn, and one apiece by Cydney Jaster, Kendyl Kidwell, Kiley Devery, and Avery Kellen.
Solon 2 CPU 0 – The Lady Spartans held off the Stormin’ Pointers 25-22 and 25-23 with nine kills from Jozie Lahr, five each by Makinley Galvin, Amelia Guinn, and Kiley Devery, two from Addison Walter, and one apiece by Kennedey Whitford and Avery Kellen.
Solon hosts WaMaC Tournament Thursday, October 16
With the WaMaC East title secured the Lady Spartans will battle for the overall conference championship Thursday with competition at both the high school and middle school starting at 4:00 p.m.
Class 4A pairings for postseason
Solon has a first round (Tuesday, October 21) bye and will host a quarterfinal match against either Central DeWitt or Clinton Thursday, October 23. Gilbert and Waterloo East will tangle Tuesday with the winner facing Marion in the quarterfinals. Quarterfinal winners will square off Tuesday, October 28 at the highest-ranked team’s site for the Region 8 Championship and a trip to the 2025 State Tournament in Coralville Monday, Nov. 3 – Thursday, Nov. 6 at Xtreme Arena.
