National Fire Prevention Week was held last week (Sunday, October 5 – Saturday, October 11) and recognized by the Solon Fire Department with their annual visit to Lakeview Elementary School.
Firefighters visited classrooms to discuss fire safety and prevention with the students and gave tours of a fire engine and the department’s heavy rescue truck, which carries specialized equipment.
National Fire Prevention Week has been observed since a proclamation in 1925 by President Calvin Coolidge and occurs during the week of October 9 in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
Firefighters and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) urge residents to test their smoke alarms, replace the batteries, and to replace their smoke and CO detectors if they are older than ten years.
