MOUNT VERNON —The Bijou Movie Theater in Mount Vernon will present a special screening of the powerful new documentary The Librarians Tuesday, October 7 at 5:30 PM. Following the film, audience members are invited to stay for a Q & A discussion with four local librarians, including Liz King, Director of the Solon Public Library.
The Librarians follows library professionals on the front lines of today’s debates over democracy and the freedom to read. The film examines escalating battles over censorship, including the Texas “Krause List,” which targeted 850 books centering on race and LGBTQIA+ stories. As book challenges spread nationwide, librarians have found themselves navigating harassment, threats, and legislation aimed at restricting access to information.
Through candid interviews and real-life accounts, the documentary reveals how librarians—often unsung community champions—are standing up against extremism to protect First Amendment rights and ensure that all voices are heard.
The evening will include the film screening, followed by a panel discussion with local librarians who will share their perspectives on how these national issues are playing out in Iowa communities.
