September is Library Card Sign-Up Month!
Back in 1987, Library Card Sign-Up Month began with a simple but powerful idea: every child should have a library card–and use it! That message still rings true today.
At the Solon Public Library, we believe a library card is your ticket to so much more than books. Use yours to check out puzzles, cake pans, the Iowa Adventure Pass, and more surprises you might not expect.
Sign up for a new card or renew your account this September and you’ll be entered to win a fun prize bundle! Because the Library is for everyone, every day.
Library Programs
Join us at Cookbook Club Saturday, September 20, at 11:00 a.m. as we dig into the Library’s epic cookbook stash. Grab a book (or two, or three…), whip up some tasty treats, and bring the goods to share on Saturday! Adults, young adults, and families are welcome to join us for Cookbook Club, no registration necessary.
Snuggle up with Willa the therapy dog! Kids in grades 1–8 can enjoy one-on-one reading time with Willa, a lovable French Bulldog who adores books, belly rubs, and library visits. Reading with a therapy dog can boost confidence and make reading fun. Read with Willa takes place regularly each month, register for your timeslot online, in person, or by phone.
Aspiring teen authors are invited for a Fiction Writer’s Workshop Thursday, September 25, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. With a mix of freewriting, prompts, and group feedback, we’ll dive into the world of fiction writing. Teen programs are intended for 6th-12th graders.
Piece It Together at the Library Friday, September 26, at 6:00 p.m. Think you and your friends have what it takes to be the fastest puzzlers in town? Gather your team (up to six players) and join the Solon Public Library’s Puzzle Competition! Each team will race to complete the same 300-piece puzzle, with bragging rights—and a prize—on the line for the winning group. Bring your sharp eyes, steady hands, and teamwork skills for an evening of fun and friendly competition. Visit our website calendar for more details and to register your team.
When you have ideas, we want to hear them! We’re holding an open Teen Advisory Board Tuesday, September 30, at 4:45 p.m. for any teen (6th-12th grades) to share their ideas for programs at the Library. Join us in person or via Zoom to share your ideas and help us plan future fun!
We’re pairing up with Annie at Thai Spice Express for a special Spring Roll Class at the Library. These delicious, fresh ingredient spring rolls are fun to roll up and enjoy. What’s New?
When you’ve read all of your favorite author’s backlog, it can feel daunting to find another author you’ll enjoy reading. Well… look no further, we can help! This month’s display features multiple well known authors and some read alike suggestions from our staff. Browse the display shelves by the front desk and discover something new.
If you enjoyed Stephen King’s The Institute, you may enjoy The Hacienda by Isabel Canas, Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo, or The Inheritance of Orquidea Divina by Zoraida Cordova.
Did you read all of Freida McFadden’s The Housemaid Series? Try The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley, None of This is True by Lisa Jewell, or The Sicilian Inheritance by Jo Piazza.
You can also take advantage of a built-in tool in our online catalog to help you discover more titles. Select a title you’ve read, scroll down to the “You May Also Like” section and find more titles to try. Or ask a staff member to show you the trick and you’ll be well on your way to having a full bookshelf.
