Advocate 2025 trips
The Solon Advocates have been organizing bus trips since 2007 and one of our favorite journeys is to Breitbach’s Restaurant in Balltown.
Breitbach’s opened in 1852 and has been owned and operated by the family for over six generations and is known as the oldest bar and restaurant in Iowa. Fire destroyed the building in 2007 and 2008 but it has been rebuilt to resemble the old structure and modernized for today’ needs. Mike and Cindy Breitbach are the current owners.
Not only is the buffet at Breitbach’s a diner’s delight it is the drive itself that is spectacular! It passes through Iowa’s Driftless Area with rolling farmland, dramatic bluffs and river valleys. Especially when the bluffs are in full color. The overlook near Breitbach’s is one of the highest scenic points in Iowa.
The buffet offers homemade soups and salad items plus meat entrees, veggies, mashed potatoes and gravy plus many specialty items. Pie selections are homemade by Cindy Breitbach. Returns to the buffet are encouraged!
Another aspect of this trip is the panoramic drive to Sunrise Apple Orchard in Gays Mills, Wisconsin. This orchard on the scenic bluffs of the Kickapoo Valley has grown over 22 apple varieties for over 100 years. Sample apples and cider are offered along with specialty foods, cheeses, meats, gifts, apple cider donuts, pumpkins and more.
