SOLON — John and Teresa Condon of Buck Hollow Band performed for the community at the Main Street bandstand Wednesday, July 2, as part of the weekly Music on Mainstreet concert series.
The couple, who live in Decorah, won the Valley Star Duo of the Year award in both 2024 and 2025 and play in several states each year. They spend their winters performing in Texas. “We play music where the sun is shining,” John Condon said. The Condon’s played many popular country songs, including “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Wagon Wheel,” “Jolene,” and “Sweet Caroline.” They also performed a variety of waltz music, a specialty of theirs.
The crowd Wednesday night was estimated at 50, with many locals biking or walking to the gazebo on the warm summer evening. In addition to Solon community members, a few loyal fans from Cedar Rapids came to hear Buck Hollow Band play.
Many attendees packed coolers with food and drinks, and sponsors of the event passed out popsicles and ice cream bars to the crowd.
The last time the Condon’s played in Solon was during RAGBRAI in 2015, which the duo noted took place during an unforecasted heavy rainstorm. Attendees might have noticed a few guitar changes throughout the evening, including a corn-themed guitar and a Texas-shaped guitar. John Condon builds all the guitars himself and is a retired wood shop teacher.
Buck Hollow Band has played more than 4,000 shows over 35 years, and they’re not slowing down anytime soon. For those who missed the July 2 show or want to catch another performance, the Condon’s will appear in Cedar Rapids Tuesday, July 15, at the Elks Club (801 33rd Ave. SW) from 6-9:00 p.m. and Thursday, July 31, at the VFW Post (3240 Southgate Place SW) from 5:30-8:30 p.m..
The next Music on Main performance will be The Country Biscuits on July 16 with a change in location due to Solon Beef Days set up. Instead of Mushroom Park, the concert will be held at Meadowlark Acres. The series returns to the bandstand Wednesday, July 23 with Funk Daddies. Code Blues rounds out the month of July on the 30th with the final concert Wednesday, August 6 bringing Kickin’ Country to the Main Street stage.
