IOWA CITY — The Iowa City Mountain Bike Club, a non-profit youth cycling team for athletes ages 8 to 18, delivered a standout performance Saturday, June 28, at the Iowa Scholastic Mountain Bike League’s state championships, held at the Proving Grounds Recreation Area in Dubuque.
Facing off against outstanding teams from across the state — including clubs from Dubuque, Decorah, Des Moines, Mason City, Scott County, and more — Iowa City secured first-place finishes in both the Junior Varsity and Middle School divisions, while the Varsity team capped off the day with a strong third-place finish.
Solon’s Anders Holmes is on the Varsity team and placed 3rd in state as an individual. Sebastian and Kaleb Holmes are on the Middle School team. Sebastian won 1st place in state as an individual.
Now in its third year, the Iowa City Mountain Bike Club has grown into one of the largest and most competitive teams in the league. With a focus on fun, skill development, and a lifelong love of cycling, the team continues to make a name for itself in Iowa’s youth mountain biking scene. The Iowa City team is made up of youth from Johnson, Linn, Iowa, and Washington counties.
“This team has worked and played hard all season. They earned individual awards but even more importantly, they earned these team championships together. They raced against tough competition and still rose to the occasion,” said coach Brian Brandsmeier. “It’s exciting to see their growth over the past few years.”
The Iowa Scholastic Mountain Bike League promotes youth development through mountain biking, offering a positive and supportive environment for riders of all skill levels. The Iowa City team’s success this season is a reflection of the club’s commitment to teamwork, perseverance, and having fun on two wheels.
