The Solon Lady Spartans capped a 2-5 week with a 10-0 win over Roland Story in Roland at the Story County Kiwanis Club softball tournament Saturday. Laeni Hinkle improved her record to 3-2 with the four inning complete game. The sophomore also chipped in three hits and four RBIs.
Solon split their other two games in Roland and had their first game cancelled due to Thursday evening rain. Solon defeated Iowa Falls 18-7 on Friday behind senior Addie Miller’s four hits and first home run of 2025. Sister Emerson and freshman Beckitt Kabela each threw a pair of innings for Solon, with Miller upping her record to 5-4.
Solon lost to 4A fifth ranked ADM in game one Saturday, 6-2. Emerson Miller threw two innings before succumbing to the heat as the Lady Spartans trailed 5-0. Kabela held the Tigers to a run over the next three innings and senior Izzy Frees produced a two run single, but they could get no closer in the loss.
In WaMaC action earlier in the week, 3A number two ranked Williamsburg swept Solon by tight scores of 5-1 and 2-0. The Lady Spartans also travelled to 4A No.11 Grinnell and again, despite staying each ballgame late, fell by scores of 17-15 and 6-1.
The Spartans entered the week of June 23 with a 13-9 overall record and 8-6 conference mark.
They are in action in Solon this Friday (June 27) and Saturday (June 28) for the Clipper Classic playing 4A 4th ranked Carlisle at 10:00 a.m. and Keokuk at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Saturday’s games are Fairfield at 10:00 a.m. and Cedar Rapids Prairie (5A #11) at 1:30 p.m.
Solon travels to West Delaware Monday, June 30, for a 5:30 p.m. varsity doubleheader and will host WaMaC West rival Clear Creek Amana Wednesday, July 3 in a 5:30 p.m. varsity doubleheader.
Two non-conference games close out the regular season with a Saturday, July 5 trip to the Anamosa Middle School at 3:30 p.m. to face the Blue Raiders and a visit from Cedar Rapids Jefferson Monday, July 7 at 6:30 p.m.
A look ahead to postseason play
Class 3A Regionals start Thursday, July 10 with the quarterfinals. Semifinals are on Saturday, July 12 and the Regional Finals, with a trip to State on the line, will be Tuesday, July 15. The IGHSAU State Tournament is set for Monday, July 21-Friday, July 25 in Fort Dodge.
