SOLON — As the Fourth of July approaches, Solon will be gearing up for the celebration with fireworks, but not without code rules from the city and the state of Iowa.
In 2017, Solon adopted city ordinance No. 440, allowing for residents of the city to launch consumer fireworks legally within city limits. The ordinance applies to the permitted dates and times of July 1-3 from 9:00 a.m. -10:00 p.m. and July 4 from 9 a.m.- 11:00 p.m.
The city’s ordinance coincides with the latest Iowa firework code, signed into law by Gov. Kim Reynolds stating that local governments can no longer restrict or ban the use of fireworks within the stated dates and times.
“The Solon ordinance was written previously [to the recent Iowa law], so there’s really no change there,” said Mark Moses, Johnson County Sheriff’s Deputy.
Citizens of unincorporated areas of Johnson County fall under the same city and state ordinances, unless an application is filed through the county Board of Supervisors, allowing for special exemptions outside of the permitted time frames set.
