Marion gets the sweep 8-7, 10-0
MARION — The week opened with a trip to the WaMaC East’s leading team, the Marion Wolves Marion, June 9, and suffered a pair of losses as the Wolves won game one 8-7 and shut out the Spartans 10-0 in the nightcap.
In the opener both teams tied with one run each in the first inning before the Wolves plated three in the second. Solon equalized with three runs in the top of the third and pulled ahead with two runs in the fifth to make it 6-4. Freshman Luke Merrick led at the plate with three hits including a double. Junior Dylan Gorham had two hits with one apiece from junior Carson Kidwell, senior Ty Bell, and sophomore Brady Wick. Bell and Wick drove in two runs with an RBI each Kidwell and junior Hayden Detra. Senior Jackson Link was charged with the loss after 6-1/3 innings on the mound. Link gave up 11 hits and eight runs (five earned), struck out three, and walked two.
The Wolves blanked Solon in the nightcap with two runs in the first, fourth, and fifth innings and four in the sixth. Luke Merrick put up the Spartans’ sole hit, a double. Wick took the loss with four innings on the bump giving up five hits and five earned runs, striking out one, and walking two. Junior Tyler Greazel pitched one inning giving up three hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts while Kidwell went from behind the plate to the bump for 1/3 inning giving up three hits and three earned runs with one walk.
Spartans soar past the Golden Hawks 9-4
SOLON — The Spartans hosted the River Valley Conference’s Golden Hawks from Mid-Prairie Wednesday, June 11 clipping the Hawks’ wings with a 9-4 win.
Solon broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the bottom of the second and added three runs in the third and four in the fourth. Mid-Prairie attempted to rally in the final three innings but only mustered two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Sophomore Maddox Kelley produced four hits to lead Solon including a double. Senior Nolan Seagren and junior Carson Kidwell knocked out a pair of hits each with a double for Kidwell as junior Hunter Knorr, seniors Ty Bell, Jackson Link, and Beau Mullen, and junior Dylan Gorham had one hit each. Seagren and Kidwell drove in two runs each with one RBI for Kelley, Link, and junior Hayden Detra.
Freshman Tate Miller took the win after 5-2/3 innings on the mound giving up three hits and four unearned runs with five strikeouts and two walks. Knorr pitched 1-1/3 innings giving up one hit, no runs, and striking out two.
Warriors top Spartans 4-3
SOLON — It was another non-conference match-up Thursday, June 12, as the Mississippi Valley Conference’s Cedar Rapids Washington Warriors visited and took a 4-3 win dropping the Spartans to 8-8 overall.
The Warriors plated one run in the top of the second with Solon equalizing in the bottom of the fourth and pulling ahead 2-1 in the sixth. Washington knotted the game at 2-all in the seventh, and a scoreless Solon half of the inning led to three scoreless extra innings before the Warriors scored two in the eleventh with the Spartans only plating one.
Sophomore Maddox Kelley and junior Dylan Gorham put up two hits each with one apiece from senior Jackson Link and junior Hunter Knorr (both doubles). Link drove in two runs in the contest. Junior Tyler Greazel was charged with the loss after four innings on the mound giving up three hits and two unearned runs with four strikeouts. Sophomore Luke Deike pitched seven innings giving up six hits and two runs (one earned) with eight strikeouts and four walks.
Solon outlasts Algona 12-11
FORT DODGE — The Spartans picked up a hard fought win Friday, June 13 as they outlasted the Algona Bulldogs 12-11 in the Iowa Central Invitational in Fort Dodge.
Sophomore Maddox Kelley produced four hits for Solon including a double and a triple, junior Dylan Gorham and senior Ty Bell had three hits each with a double for Bell, senior Nolan Seagren had a pair of singles as did freshman Luke Merrick while junior Hayden Detra and sophomore Brady Wick had a base hit each. Bell drove in three runs with two RBIs for Kelley and junior Carson Kidwell. Merrick and Wick each drove in one run.
Gorham took the win with 2-1/3 innings on the mound giving up one hit, striking out three, and walking one. Merrick pitched four innings giving up five hits and four runs (two earned), striking out six, and walking three. Seagren and junior Hunter Knorr pitched 1/3 inning each with Seagren giving up one hit and one run while Knorr gave up three hits and six runs (three earned).
Solon improved to 9-8 overall and 4-4 in the WaMaC East with five WaMaC opponents and a non-conference game on-tap for this week, weather permitting.
