Over $30,000 in improvements have been made to Legion Field in Solon. The Solon Area Community Foundation was a major donor toward a new scoreboard for the Lady Spartan’s softball field.
SOLON — Solon High School’s baseball field at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area (SRNA) is recognized as one of, if not the top, high school baseball field in Iowa after major improvements done in 2022 and 2023. Legion Field and the Lady Spartan softball field have also seen improvements this year.
The Black and Orange Baseball Club oversees the Legion Field and recently spent over $30,000 on a new zero turn mower, painting, landscaping, fencing, batting cage net and other improvements. Alliant Energy, Jay Proffit Trucking, E and J Electric, Home Made and CJ’z Tree Service all made major contributions to the project.
Most of the funding was supplied by Angie Capper and her husband, the late Dwayne Capper.
The Solon Softball Field scoreboard was replaced recently also. Major donations from the Solon Area Community Foundation and the Solon Athletic Booster Club combined with proceeds from a pair of youth softball tournaments hosted by the high school team contributed $20,000 to the funding campaign. The lights at the field were replaced by Solon Community School last year for $135,000.
