IOWA CITY — More than 60 community members, REALTORS®, builders, and city officials attended an educational event on June 11 at the Iowa City Area Association of REALTORS® Education Center to learn about Iowa’s newly passed statewide Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) law. This landmark legislation requires all cities and counties in Iowa to allow homeowners to build ADUs on their property, opening new doors for flexible, affordable housing options.
Understanding Iowa’s New ADU Law: What It Means for Communities, Builders & Homeowners was presented by AARP Iowa in partnership with local housing leaders. The session offered guidance on what the law entails, how it could address housing needs across generations, and how local communities can implement ADUs effectively. A complimentary lunch was provided before the start of the presentation.
The presentation featured expert insights and realworld experience from Paige Yantz, State Advocacy Manager, AARP Iowa, Michael Wagler, State Executive Director, AARP Iowa, AND Andy Martin, Owner, Martin Construction. Two Iowa legislators were also in attendance, showing their support for housing education and community engagement around this important new law. Attendees walked away with a clearer understanding of how ADUs can provide solutions to local housing shortages, support multigenerational living, and enhance property value. The event concluded with a robust Q&A session, where participants asked practical and policy-related questions about ADU implementation.
The event was hosted by Housing Action Team of Johnson County Livable Community for Successful Aging, Iowa City Area Association of REALTORS®, Greater Iowa City Area Home Builders Association, and Johnson County Affordable Housing Coalition.
