INDEPENDENCE — The Spartans opened another week on the diamonds with a trip to Independence Monday, June 2 and a doubleheader against the Mustangs.
An eight-run effort by Solon in the eighth inning of game one delivered an 11-6 win. The Mustangs built a 3-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and one in the third before a trio of Spartans scored in the top of the third to tie. Five Mustangs galloped in for the fifth inning with one scoring in the sixth for a 9-3 advantage going into the seventh.
Maddox Kelley and Carson Kidwell led with two hits each. Nolan Seagren, Dylan Gorham, Ty Bell, Luke Deike, and Hayden Detra knocked one hit apiece. Seagren, Gorham, Kidwell, and Deike had a double each with two RBIs for Gorham, Luke Merrick, and Deike.
Jackson Link pitched five innings giving up five hits and four earned runs with five strikeouts. Luke Deike pitched one inning giving up two hits and one unearned run with a pair of strikeouts. Tyler Greazel took the win with one inning on the mound giving up two hits and one unearned run with one strikeout.
The Mustangs took the nightcap with a six-inning effort in the bottom of the third, two in the fourth, and three in the fifth bracketed by one-run innings in the second and sixth to hammer Solon 13-4. The Spartans plated one run in the third and three in the fourth.
Kelley, a sophomore, led with two hits with one each by senior Seagren, junior Gorham, senior Bell, and junior Hunter Knorr. Freshman Merrick and Knorr drove in one run each.
Sophomore Brady Wick was charged with the loss after three innings on the bump giving up six hits and seven runs (five earned). Kelley pitched 1-2/3 innings giving up two hits and one unearned run, Seagren pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up one hit and one earned run while Gorham pitched one inning giving up four hits and four earned runs with one strikeout.
