Solon’s Middle School boys’ track team wrapped up a record setting season placing second in the 8th grade Large School Division of the Mike Henderson Boys’ State Track Meet in Waukee Saturday May 10. The Spartans contended to the final race before being edged by 4A Southeast Polk 50-46.
Mac Svalstad repeated his 7th grade win in the 800 and took second in the 1600 meters. Solon newcomer Luke Devery won the discus throw on his final toss after placing third in the shot put. Aiden Olson won the 7th grade 800 and was second in the 400 meters. He then replaced an injured Greyson Burg in 8th grade 4×400 relay joining Colton Kolar, Declan Doyle and Jaimyn Bevans to place third and clinch a second place team position for the 8th grade team.
Easton Shipley joined, Kolar, Doyle and Bevans earlier in the meet to place third in the distance medley relay to account for the remaining Spartan points.
Other season highlights included the team’s second place finish at the Drake Relays in the Middle School distance medley relay. Solon was the only sub-4A school to qualify and set a school record with their 3:48 performance. The team included Kolar, Bevans, Burg and Svalstad. Svalstad, Kolar and Bevans teamed with Brooks Kabela to shave 17 seconds off the 2011 4×800 relay record at the WaMaC middle school meet Friday, May 9, clocking a 9:06 time.
