Staff Picks
As an extension of our National Library Week celebrations, we offer a variety of staff picks on the display shelves at the Library. One thing we all can agree upon is that we love to share great books, movies, and other items with our community. Here are a few books we’ve enjoyed lately, come by to find something you’ll enjoy too!
Kill Her Twice by Stacey Lee recommended by Lily, “a teen historical fiction book that will appeal to many readers.” Los Angeles, 1932: Lulu Wong, star of the silver screen and the pride of Chinatown, has a face known to practically anyone, especially to the Chow sisters— May, Gemma, and Peony—Lulu’s former classmates and neighbors. So the girls instantly know it’s Lulu whose body they discover one morning in an outof-the-way stable, far from the Beverly Hills mansion where she moved once her fame skyrocketed. The sisters suspect Lulu’s death is the result of foul play, but the LAPD—known for being corrupt to the core—doesn’t seem motivated to investigate. Even worse, there are signs that point to the possibility of a police cover-up, and powerful forces in the city want to frame the killing as evidence that Chinatown is a den of iniquity and crime, even more reason it should be demolished to make room for the construction of a new railway depot, Union Station.
Queen of Sugar Hill: A Novel of Hattie McDaniel by ReShonda Tate recommended by Liz, “a well-researched historical fiction book about the life of the person behind the award-winning role.” It was supposed to be the highlight of her career, the pinnacle for which she’d worked all her life. And as Hattie McDaniel took the stage in 1940 to claim an honor that would make her the first African-American woman to win an Academy Award, she tearfully took her place in history. Between personal triumphs and tragedies, heartbreaking losses, and severe setbacks, this historic night of winning best supporting actress for her role as the sassy Mammy in the controversial movie Gone With the Wind was going to be life-changing. Or so she thought.
Say You’ll Remember Me by Abby Jimenez is recommended by Megan, “readers will enjoy a laugh-out-loud comedy with witty banter and a deeply emotional romance.” There’s no such thing as a perfect guy, but Xavier Rush comes disastrously close. A gorgeous veterinarian giving Greek god vibes—all while cuddling a tiny kitten? Immediate yes. That is until Xavier opens his mouth and proves that even sculpted gods can say the absolute wrong thing. Like, really wrong. Of course, there’s nothing Samantha loves more than proving an asshole wrong… unless, of course, he can admit he made a mistake.
