SWISHER — Two hunters and a dog were rescued Saturday morning after an incident near the Sandy Beach boat ramp.
According to Kristen Silver, Public Information Officer for the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 6:34 a.m., an 18-year-old and 17-yearold male were near the Sandy Beach boat ramp preparing for a duck hunting outing. The pair were using a canoe to set up decoys when one of the male’s waders began taking in water, and he was unable to get back into the canoe. However, he was able to get to shallower water.
The Swisher (Jefferson-Monroe Twp.) Fire Department, North Liberty Fire Department, Area Ambulance Service (Cedar Rapids), and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and launched two rescue boats. The responders were able to successfully rescue the young men and their dog with one male transported by ambulance to a local hospital for symptoms of hypothermia.
