IOWA CITY — Five Johnson County 4-Hers participated in the Extemporaneous Speaking competition Tuesday, July 9 at the Johnson County Extension Office. The extemporaneous speaking contest is designed to encourage the development of communication skills by providing an opportunity to think, organize thoughts, prepare a speech, and respond to questions when given a limited amount of preparation time.
Each participant selects one of three topics and is given thirty minutes to prepare a speech. Speeches must be between four to six minutes in length, evaluated based on eight different criteria: content, knowledge, organization, expression, voice, stage presence, general effect, and response to questions.
Madison Singbeil (Macbride’s Pride 4-H Club) received a white ribbon and a Merit award.
