SOLON — Front and center at Music on Main Street last Wednesday was an 11-year-old kid hammering away on a metal rail. Orion Simmons is the youngest member of the DTKK, a German polka band from the Amana area.
This was the band’s second time at Music on Main Street in their 50-year history. The band was originally formed to play in the celebrations of Oktoberfest, but now they play almost year-round. DTKK typically plays at Millstream Brewing Co. in Amana. They do occasionally travel to places around Iowa and will even travel to Germany next year for a few gigs.
But on Wednesday, they battled sprinkles throughout the show and played their full 90 minute upbeat German polka performance that danced into the ears of the audience at the bandstand on Main Street.
Next week Jake Rebman and the Waitin Rounders perform at 7:00 p.m. featuring Solon’s Chase Samek on steel guitar.
