SOLON — Sparty’s Boys of Summer kept busy on the diamonds last week with four wins in six games to improve to 13-4 overall and 8-1 in the WaMaC East.
Spartans split with Marion 11-10 and 0-15
Marion’s Wolves visited Monday, June 3 to open the busy week. The Wolves opened game one with three runs in the top of the first inning but a grand slam homerun by Vince Steinbrech in the bottom of the first made it 4-3. Nolan Seagren drove in Brett White in the second inning and White hammered a solo homer in the fourth followed by an RBI double from Steinbrech to put Solon up 7-3 while a Maddox Kelley two-RBI double made it 9-3. Marion plated three runners in the fifth. White walked home in the bottom of the fifth after Steinbrech was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Kelley knocked an RBI single to bring Seagren in making it 11-6. Four Wolves crossed the plate in the sixth and Tyson Wheeler (who relieved Steinbrech on the mound in the sixth) earned the save with a game-ending strikeout in the top of the seventh.
White, Seagren, and Steinbrech produced three hits each with six RBIs for Steinbrech. Kelley had two hits with one apiece from Gehrig Turner and Garret Stebral. Steinbrech took the win with 5-2/3 innings giving up ten hits and ten runs (eight earned), walking three and striking out four. Wheeler gave up one hit and issued one strikeout.
Marion plated three runs in the first inning of the nightcap followed by four in the second, one each in the third and fourth, and six in the fifth. Kelley and Beau Mullen had one hit each for Solon. Kaden Hanson was charged with the loss after three innings giving up eight hits and eight runs (seven earned), walking two and striking out two. Dylan Gorham pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up three hits and five earned runs walking two and striking out two. Stebral pitched 1/3 inning giving up three hits and one earned run and Kelley pitched one inning giving up one earned run, walking one, and striking out one.
Solon shuts out Mid-Prairie 4-0
The boys traveled to Wellman Tuesday, June 4 and defeated the fifth-ranked (in Class 2A) Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks. Three Spartans scored in the top of the third inning with one run in the fifth. Brett White notched his fifth dinger of the season with a three-RBI effort and had two hits total on the night. Gehrig Turner produced a pair of singles with one hit each from Vince Steinbrech, Garret Stebral, Tyler Bell (a double), and Tyson Wheeler. Jackson Link went the distance giving up three hits and no runs, walking one and striking out seven.
Spartans overhaul South Tama 24-0 and 13-1
Sparty’s crew only needed four innings in game one of the varsity doubleheader last Thursday at South Tama as they neutralized the Trojans with nine runs in the first, six in the second, seven in the third, and two in the fifth.
Nolan Seagren and Dylan Gorham belted out three hits with a pair of doubles and six RBIs for Seagren and two doubles and two RBIs for Gorham. Brett White slammed a pair of homers for six RBIs, Gehrig Turner had two hits with a double and two RBIs, and Vince Steinbrech, Garret Stebral, Cole Farnsworth, and Kaden Hanson had one hit each with a double for Hanson. Tyler Bell took the win with three innings on the mound giving up two hits, walking two, and striking out five. Josh Milliman pitched one inning giving up no hits.
The Spartans plated three in the first, two in the second, three in the fifth, one in the sixth, and four in the seventh of the nightcap. White hammered a single, double and his third homer of the night with a pair of RBIs while Gorham had a pair of doubles with an RBI. Nolan Seagren, Turner, Maddox Kelley, Beau Mullen, Jackson Link, Tyler Bell, and Tyson Wheeler had one hit each with a double for Seagren, Turner, Kelley, Mullen, and Bell and two RBIs for Seagren and Wheeler. Turner took the win after 4-2/3 innings on the mound giving up two hits and one earned run walking three and dispensing eight strikeouts. Seagren pitched 1-1/3 innings giving up two hits and Kelley worked one inning striking out three.
Little Hawks win 3-0 in Crosstown Classic
Again this year Solon hosted the annual Fight With Flash Crosstown Classic providing a day of rivalry baseball while remembering Austin “Flash” Schroeder, and raising money for the Fight With Flash Foundation, which creates pediatric cancer awareness, raises funds for medical research, and supports families with a pediatric cancer patient.
The Spartans opened the day by taking on Iowa City High’s Little Hawks. City scored one run in the first, second, and fifth innings for the win.
In other action Liberty High School (North Liberty) topped Clear Creek Amana 9-4 and Iowa City West High edged past Regina Catholic (Iowa City) 6-5.
