SOLON — The 2024 Music on Main Street concert series opened last week with an international flavor as the Solon High School Mariachi band performed. Mariachi is a Mexican traditional folk music style, which incorporates violins, guitars, guitarron (a very large deep-bodied six-string acoustic bass guitar), vihuela (in contrast to the guitarron, a very small guitar), and trumpets.
Music on Main Street is an 11-week series with concerts held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesdays in downtown Solon at the bandstand (with the exception of the July 17 concert featuring Solon native Alex Newkirk, which will be held at Meadowlark Acres on Racine Drive at the Solon Senior Housing complex) and features several different genres of music.
DTKK, “The Amana Colonies’ original and authentic German blaskapelle (brass band)” polka band performs Wednesday, June 19 followed by Solon’s own Mill Creek Band on the 26th. Solon’s Chase Samek will be on steel guitar with Jake Rebman and the Waitin Rounders (country music) July 3 followed by Bob and Dean (country music) the 10th and the aforementioned Alex (Newkirk) and Molly concert the 17th. Another Solonite, Kiersten Conway, and the Townline Septet bring jazz to the stage July 24 with Jeff Allen (50s, 60s, and originals) on the 31st. The Still Waters Praise Team (Christian) and Kickin Country Band round out the series.
