SOLON — The Lady Spartans won four out of five games last week with doubleheader sweeps against WaMaC East foe Marion and WaMaC West’s South Tama before dropping a non-conference game to Regina Catholic (Iowa City).
Solon sweeps Marion 5-4 and 7-6
The week opened Monday, June 3 at home with a visit from the Marion Wolves.
In the opener Marion plated three runs in the top of the first inning and scored their final run in the fourth while Solon tied with three runs in the bottom of the second and took a 4-3 lead in the third. The winning run scored in the bottom of the seventh.
Maddyn Gates knocked a pair of doubles and drove in two runs while Izzy Frees, Keegan Kleppe, Addie Miller, and Avery Babbitt smacked one hit apiece with a double for Miller and Babbitt. Laeni Hinkle spent six innings in the circle giving up seven hits and four earned runs, walking seven and striking out two. Emerson Miller pitched one inning giving up no hits and no runs.
Solon opened the nightcap with six runs in the bottom of the first and plated one more in the fourth. The Wolves scored one run in the second, fourth, and fifth before rallying with three runs in the seventh.
Frees, Miller, and Bailey Woolley produced two hits each with a double for Frees and two RBIs for Woolley. Kleppe, Gates, Babbitt, Emerson Miller, and Kayla Meseck had one hit apiece with two RBIs for Emerson Miller and a double for Meseck. Grimm took the win with 6-1/3 innings in the circle giving up eight hits and six runs (three earned), walking five and striking out one. Emerson Miller pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up one hit.

Sparty’s Ladies shelled South Tama in a WaMaC East vs. WaMaC West doubleheader shutout Wednesday, June 5 at South Tama.
One run crossed the dish in the top of the first inning in game one followed by a four-run volley in the fourth and eight in the fifth. Dillon Ostrander, Keegan Kleppe, Olivia Trachta, Layla Knazze, and Laeni Hinkle hammered out two hits each with three RBIs for Hinkle off a pair of doubles and two for Trachta (with one double). Addie Miller and Kendall Jensen had one hit each with a triple and two RBIs for Miller and a double and one RBI for Jensen. Jensen pitched all five innings giving up no hits and striking out ten.
Three Solon runs opened the nightcap followed by one in the third, two in the fourth, three in the fifth and nine in the sixth. Maddyn Gates pounded out four hits including a pair of doubles and four RBIs to lead. Izzy Frees had three hits and drove in three runs while Kayla Meseck, Avery Babbitt, Bailey Woolley, Zoey Grimm, and Trachta had two hits each with a triple and one RBI for Meseck and four for Babbitt. Livya Nelson and Knazze had one hit each. Grimm went the six-inning distance giving up one hit, walking three, and striking out two.
Regals top Solon 4-2
The ladies took a little break from WaMaC competition and traveled to Regina Catholic (Iowa City) Thursday, June 6 to face the No.6-ranked (in Class 2A) Regals who scored three runs in the bottom of the third and one in the fourth. Solon’s runs came in the top of the seventh and were driven in by Izzy Frees with a two-RBI double. Maddyn Gates, Kendall Jensen, Bailey Woolley, and Kayla Meseck had one hit each in the contest. Kendall Jensen went the distance giving up one hit and four runs (one earned), walking one and striking out three.
IGHSAU rankings
Solon dropped from No. 7 to No. 10 in Class 3A in the Wednesday, June 5 rankings by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU). Williamsburg moved into the No. 1 spot as former No. 1 Wahlert Catholic dropped to No. 3 and Benton Community moved from No. 4 to No. 2. Mount Vernon moved up one spot from No. 5 to No. 4.
