SOLON — “Summer in Solon is upon us, and I’ve got to tell you, I love summer in Solon,” so said City Administrator Cami Rasmussen as she opened her monthly update on the city’s happening Wednesday, May 29 at Solon Senior Dining. “There’s no better place to be and we’re gearing up for a big summer.”
Of course the biggest event is Solon Beef Days, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, July 19 and 20.
The annual garage sales were held this past weekend (May 31 and June 1) with 80 sales registered with the city for signage and placement on the official map.
Rasmussen thanked all who attended the Firemen’s Breakfast May 26 and reported that 2,377 were served during the event, a major fundraiser for the all-volunteer fire department. “We have 35 volunteer firefighters who dedicate their time to protect our community.” The Solon-Tri Township Fire Department has one of the largest districts in the state, she said, comprising some 112 square miles. “They deserve our support, for sure. There probably are several of us in this room, including myself that have had to make that call, and the folks that respond are our friends and our neighbors. The people of our community are very blessed.”
Rasmussen addressed the delayed opening of the splash pad at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area (SRNA). The splash pad typically opens Memorial Day weekend, however a mechanical issue forced it to remain closed. It opened this past Friday morning after repairs. The Solon Dog Park, however, did open on-schedule this past weekend and is located in the Trail Ridge Estates (on the south side of Highway 382) subdivision just west of the Oakland Cemetery. Parking is available on the street or at the SRNA (roughly a ¼ mile away) with the Hoover Nature Trail providing access.
Use of the dog park is free.
“It’s pretty exciting to have our first dog park because In all the years I’ve been here (nearly 30), there’s been talk about a dog park, so it’s exciting to finally get one up and going.”
