SHELLSBURG — The varsity boys golf team hoisted more hardware last week as they won the WaMaC Conference Super Meet at the Wildcat Golf Course in Shellsburg Monday, May 6. The Spartans won the 18-hole event with a combined total of 304 to top the field. West Delaware (310), Marion (312), Williamsburg (313), Vinton-Shellsburg (317), Grinnell (321), Independence (321), Center Point-Urbana (323), Clear Creek Amana (326), Mount Vernon (336), South Tama (339), and Benton Community (361) rounded out the field of contenders.
Isaih Zoske, a junior, medaled with 39. Zoske led the state (across all three classes) with a nine-hole low of 29, a nine-hole average of 34.25, and was tied for third with an 18-hole low of 67.
Crew Klingner of Williamsburg was runner up with 70.
Jack McCarty shot 73 for fourth on the leader board with West Delaware’s Aidan Zirtzman and Marion’s Josh Noll. Brennan Heesch was 13th (78) with West Delaware’s Macoy Peyton and Marion’s Asher Castenson. Nick Stahle shot 84 for 34th with West Delaware’s Colson Mersch and CCA’s Carson Nash and Logan DeKoter. Jack Irwin carded 92 (56th).
Solon takes runner up at 3A Sectional
The Marion Wolves won a Class 3A Sectional Meet last Wednesday at the Pin Oak Pub and Links in Manchester with a combined total of 307. The Spartans took runner up with 309. West Delaware (319), Center Point-Urbana (326), Decorah (343), Anamosa (348), Maquoketa (363), and Waukon (378) filled out the field hoping to advance.
Marion’s Lawson Berndt medaled with 68 with Zoske and Heesch tying for second with 75. McCarty put up 76 for fourth, Gehrig Turner had 83 (16th), Irwin shot an 89 (25th), and Stahle had 90 (28th).
Postseason schedule
The Spartans advanced to a 3A District Meet Monday at the Waverly Municipal Golf Course with Gilbert, Marion, and Waverly-Shell Rock. Qualifiers will advance to the 2024 IHSAA State Golf Championships Monday, May 20-Tuesday, May 21 in Ames.
