With spring in the air, lots of folks are taking to the road on two wheels.
Whether on a motorcycle or bicycle, being “Iowa nice” and sharing the road comes with responsibilities for everyone.
We can all celebrate May as both Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and National Bicycle Safety Month by:
• Paying attention to the task of driving and removing any distractions that might cause you to lose focus.
• Being extra cautious when changing lanes or turning as smaller vehicles can sometimes be more difficult to see.
• Checking all mirrors and blind spots. A good rule is “Look twice, save a life.”
• Passing cyclists at a safe distance.
• Obeying the speed limit.
For motorcyclists, whether you’ve been riding for years or just getting your first motorcycle, a rider education course can help you hone the skills that will keep you safer on the road. Courses are offered all over Iowa. To find a course near you, go to https://iowadot.gov/mvd/motorcycle/Motorcycle-rider-education.
