SOLON — It was a little after 10:00 p.m. as a U-Haul truck backed into the driveway of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office substation in Solon. Eight men and two women quickly yet carefully removed a six-foot tall figure – Herky the Hawk in a Johnson County Sheriff’s uniform and placed him on a concrete base. After a few minutes of drilling and bolting him into place, “Sheriff Herky” was wrapped in black plastic sheeting, and the crew moved next door to the Community Center to repeat the process with “Iowa Brass Herky.”
In all, Nick Pfeiffer (VP of Public Affairs, Think Iowa City), Brian Detert (Tiffin Public Works), Kylee Walker (Think Iowa City), Grant Harbour (Think Iowa City), Brad Freidhof (Johnson County Conservation), Doug Boldt (Tiffin City Administrator), Jonas Zimmerman (City of Tiffin), Jeff Capps (Iowa Children’s Museum), Scott Kleppe (Solon Public Works Director), and Cami Rasmussen (Solon City Administrator) installed six Herky on Parade III statues in Solon with seven more in Coralville and Tiffin under the cover of darkness ahead of the official unveiling at 10:00 the next morning.
