SOLON — Voters will determine who appears on the general election ballot in November with their choices in a Tuesday, June 4 primary election.
At the top of the ballot Democrat Christina Bohanan runs unopposed in her bid to unseat Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks for U.S. House of Representatives 1st District. Miller-Meeks will attempt to fend off challenger David Pautsch to face Bohanan in November.
Democrat Amy Nielsen is unopposed in her effort to retain her State Representative, District 85 (Solon, Cedar Twp., Big Grove Twp., and Graham Twp.) seat. Three candidates are vying for the District 91 seat in the Iowa House (Big Grove Twp.) currently occupied by Republican Brad Sherman with Republicans Adam Grier and Judd Lawler battling for the November ballot while Democrat Jay Gorsh is unopposed.
In Iowa Senate District 46 (Big Grove Twp.) Republican Dawn Driscoll will face challenger Ed Chabal, a Democrat, in November. Both are unopposed in the June 4 primary.
Five candidates, all Democratic, are on the ballot for the Johnson County Board of Supervisors with three advancing to the November election. Incumbents Rod Sullivan, Lisa Green-Douglass, and Royceann Porter face challenges from newcomers Bob Conrad and Mandi Remington.
County Auditor Travis Wipert and County Sheriff Brad Kunkel, both Democrats, face no primary election challenger and are unopposed by the Republicans.
For the June 4 election Republicans, Democrats, and Libertarians have their own ballot however there are no Libertarian candidates. In order to vote in the primary election, voters must declare a party affiliation. Voters are able to change their affiliation when they vote or request a mailed ballot.
Important dates and deadlines
• Wednesday, May 15 – First day of early voting at the Johnson County Auditor’s Office (913 S. Dubuque St., Iowa City). Also, first day ballots can be mailed.
• Monday, May 20 – 5:00 p.m. pre-registration deadline, however Election Day registration is still available. Also, 5:00 p.m. deadline to request a mailed ballot. In-person early voting is still available after this date.
• Monday, May 27 – Memorial Day. Auditor’s Office is closed.
• Saturday, June 1 – Auditor’s Office is required by law to be open for early voting. Other early voting hours will be announced.
• Monday, June 3 – Last day for in-person early voting.
• Tuesday, June 4 – Election Day. Polls open 7:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. Mailed absentee ballots MUST be returned by 8:00 p.m.
