SOLON — The Lady Spartans dropped to 2-4 on the season and 0-4 in the WaMaC East after falling to Independence and Center Point-Urbana last week.
Independence 1 Solon 0
Sophomore keeper Audrey Heineman made 18 saves Tuesday, April 9 at Lyle Leinbaugh Field in Independence as the Lady Spartans fell to the Mustangs.
“Independence was a tough matchup,” said Coach Amanda Paulson. “They are a quality team with a fully returning lineup. We lacked focus at the start of the game, which resulted in a goal off of a corner kick within the first minute for independence.” Paulson added “We were able to battle the rest of the game. I was proud of our work ethic and physicality throughout the entire game. We kept great focus. We did not have many scoring chances but maintained pressure throughout the field. we also had excellent hustle and energy from Delainey Durr and Laney Johnson coming off of the bench.”
CPU 2 Solon 1
After two overtime periods resulted in a 1-1 stalemate, the Stormin’ Pointers of Center Point-Urbana and Lady Spartans turned to a penalty kick (PK) shootout, in the rain, to decide the match Thursday, April 11. Rose McAtee put Solon on the board in the first period for a 1-0 lead, which held until the Pointers scored on a PK. CPU outscored Solon 4-3 in the shootout for the win.
“CPU was another slower start,” said Paulson. “It took us a while to get into the game. We had a great goal in the first half by Rose McAtee after a nice string of passes. Unfortunately, we had a questionable call in the box that gave them a PK to tie up the game. I was proud of our energy and fitness throughout the game, especially pushing into the wind. I would have liked to see more possession and connection of passes. This comes from our lack of communication.”
