TIFFIN — The Solon girls track team returned to action Thursday, April 5, edging out Mid Prairie for the Jane Astor Relays title hosted by Clear Creek Amana. The victorious Lady Spartans won three events overall in the 13 team field and outscored the Golden Hawks 168-142.5 to gain the Class A victory among the seven teams in that division.
Senior Gracie Federspiel and junior Aly Stahle had hands in two of the victories as Federspiel won the 800-meter run in a season best 2:21.95. She then joined Stahle to cap the night winning the 4×400-meter relay in a top 8 statewide 4:07.32 clocking. Joining the duo were juniors Lietz and Grace Hoeper. Stahle struck gold in the 4×200-meter relay as well where she joined sophomores Piper Stahle and Marin Ashbacker as well as senior Mia Duckett. The foursome finished in a season best 1:47.92. Solon’s “B” 4×400 relay also ran well placing 4th in 4:28.79. The group included freshmen Jerzey Haluska and Ava Rowles as well as sophomore Jillian Elijah and junior Olivia Bonnema.
The Lady Spartans racked up points in several events with runner up finishes. Leading off the running events was the 800-meter sprint medley relay posting a time of 1:50.77. Earning silver in the event were Piper Stahle, Ashbacker, Lietz and Federspiel. The shuttle hurdle relay and distance medley followed. Shuttle hurdle members Mia Stahle (Sr.), Aly Stahle, sophomore Trea Eidahl and junior Zoey Grimm clocked 1:08.31. The distance medley team of Mia Stahle, Eidahl, Haluska and Hoeper posted a 4:33.04 time. Lietz and Mia Stahle also added runner up placings in the 400-meter dash (1:01.69) and 100-meter hurdles (16.35). Junior Sydney Dee followed Lietz placing 4th in 1:04.46. Dee then doubled up with a 3rd place in the 1500-meter run (5:15.96).
The Lady Spartan sprinters added points in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Duckett took 3rd (12.74 ) with Aly Stahle close behind in 4th (12.84). Piper Stahle ran 28.30 to place 6th in the 200. Mia Stahle added a third place in the 400 hurdles clocking 1:11.32 and the 400-meter relay team placed 5th in 54.03. The quarter was made up of senior Bella Jedlicka , sophomore Jillian Elijah, junior Lucy Miller and Ashbacker. Solon’s 4×800-meter relay rounded out the running events scoring. Rowles and freshman Falyn Svalstad teamed with veteran seniors Ashlynn Williams and Anna Quillin to place 4th in 10:28.69.
Solon athletes also produced points in three field events. Senior high jumper Lily Towne cleared a personal best 5 feet, even earning 5th place. Senior Abigail Fenton also placed 5th in the shot put (35-1 1/2) and discus (108-9).
Friday, April 12, the Lady Spartans will compete in Linn-Mar’s varsity girls meet (starting at 4:30 p.m.) ahead of a Monday, April 15 varsity co-ed invitational at Williamsburg (4:00 p.m. start) and hosting the annual Denny Grueber Co-Ed Relays Tuesday, April 16 (4:15 p.m. start).
