TIFFIN —Ben Kampman led the Solon boys track effort Thursday night (April 4) in Tiffin at the CCA Boys Invitational. Kampman uncorked a discus toss of 170 feet, 10 inches ranking him 5th in the state and setting up a likely Drake Relays invite later this month. He won the event and added a 6th place effort in the shot-putting throwing 47-11. Senior Marcus Richard also placed in shot (5th) with a 48-8 effort and senior Mason Scott grabbed 5th place hurling 135-9 in the discus.
Other Solon winners included senior Mike Yeomans coasting to a 2:03.51 in the 800-meter run and the shuttle hurdle relay team of seniors Nash Kotar, Charlie Brandt, Ben Duckett and junior Cole Carney posting a 1:02.83 in cold and windy conditions.
Freshman Kaden Hoeper cleared 6 feet in the high jump to take home a silver medal as did junior Caleb Bock in the long jump (20-1 1/2). Solon’s senior sprint medley quartet of Austin Knight, Brayden Moore, Grant Knipper and Mike Yeomans were runner ups (1:36.6) as well as the distance medley team of sophomore Eli Kampman and seniors Keenan Kruse, Milo Ashbacker and Grant Bumsted (3:46.43). The 400-meter relay of Kotar, Kampman, Carney and Knight also placed second in the 44.65.
Third place finishes included sophomore Spencer Michels in the 1600-meter run (4:50.94) and two relays. Seniors Rhett Mesch, Knight, Moore and Knipper claimed third in the 4×200 meter relay (1:33.12) and freshman Maddox Kelley teamed with seniors Bumsted, Ashbacker and Gavin Sieverding to clock 3:37.69 in the 4×400 meter relay.
Solon’s other individual placers were Knipper (23.46) and Ashbacker (23.66) in the 200-meter dash along with Kruse (1:01.61) and Brandt (1:01.72) in the 400-meter low hurdles. No team scores were kept.
