SOLON — When the Spartans take the field this summer for baseball, they’ll do it with a brand new scoreboard keeping track of the action.
The current scoreboard has been displaying the balls, strikes, hits, errors, and runs since the diamond was built (and the Solon Nature and Recreation Area (SRNA) was fully opened in 2003. Bob and Glenda Eubanks and Family paid 100% of the cost in 2002 and their name has proudly been displayed on the scoreboard for 20 seasons.
“Cameron Eubanks is an alumni of the Solon Baseball Program having graduated in 2003,” said Head varsity coach Keith McSweeney. “The Solon High School Baseball Program and Solon Community School District have been grateful for their tremendous support.”
The field has been undergoing renovation including a new scoreboard, one that is also 100% funded through donations and granted funding. “The Solon Area Community Foundation (SACF), the Washington Riverboat Foundation, and private donations made through the SACF are the donors that have made the transition to a new scoreboard possible,” McSweeney said. “The purchase of the scoreboard is part of the second phase of the Solon Baseball Field Renovation Project that was undertaken by a project/fundraising committee that has been meeting regularly since 2020. The committee is composed of various stakeholders within the Solon High School Baseball Program, and all phases of the project have also been supported (in one way or another) by the Solon Board of Education and the Solon Community School District. For the scoreboard, the committee solicited donations from the Solon Area Community Foundation, as well as pursued a grant from the Washington Riverboard Foundation that was awarded this past December. Without these donations and the grant, the purchase of the new scoreboard would not have been possible.”
McSweeney anticipates the new scoreboard will be installed during the first couple weeks in May. A city-owned scoreboard (which is no longer in use) on the backside will be removed prior to the current board coming down. The Solon City Council approved a resolution regarding removal of the city’s scoreboard and replacement of the baseball scoreboard during their regular meeting Wednesday, April 3. The City and Solon Community School District have a 28E agreement for use of the SRNA.
“To say that we are excited about this new addition to our beautiful facility would be an understatement,” the coach added.
