VAN HORNE — The Lady Spartans opened the season Saturday by winning Benton Community’s invitational at the Tara Hills Country Club after weather postponed a meet earlier in the week. Solon topped the seven-team field with 385 followed by the host Bobcats (415), Independence (428), Vinton-Shellsburg (472), and Postville (505). Columbus Catholic and Center Point-Urbana also competed but did not field complete teams.
Rylie Greazel was the champion with 92 and teammate Sydney Dee was runner up at 93. Bailey Woolley carded an even 100 as did Jaya Farlinger. Peyton Pentico shot 108, and Emma Phelps carded 109 for the 18-hole day.
Monday, the ladies traveled to Pleasant Valley Golf Course for Regina Catholic’s quad meet and won with 192. Lisbon was runner up at 201, West Liberty was third with 229 while the host Regals did not field enough golfers for a team score. Dee medaled with 44 (via card back). Mya Miller (3rd overall, 48), Izzy Frees (6th overall, 50), Farlinger (7th, 50), Greazel (8th, 50), and Bailey Wooley (11th, 56) rounded out the Lady Spartans.
“Pleasant Valley is a tough course to play, especially this early in the season,” said Coach Curtis Hendrickson. “It was good for our girls to see it as it will help prepare us for tough courses down the road. Some of our girls weren’t happy with their scores, so I think that will motivate them to keep working to improve.”
