Solon has always had a strong tradition of vocal jazz. Every year they compete for a spot in the Iowa Vocal Jazz Championships, which were held in Waukee Wednesday, March 27.
The event helps to promote the growth of vocal jazz in Iowa by providing a venue where jazz choirs can showcase the best vocal jazz programs in their respective classes. Since the start of this event in 2007, vocal jazz has vastly grown in the state of Iowa. Jazz champs continues to recognize exceptional musicians and directors in the state.
This year, 5th Street secured one of eight spots to compete, and walked away with the state title for 3A. Sabrina Allen (senior) was also awarded outstanding performer. These students have been working rigorously since September to prepare a difficult set of jazz tunes and have been performing at various jazz festivals this Winter and Spring. It’s always exciting to see the hard work pay off. Another Spartan win!
