SOLON — Blue skies, warm temperatures, a near-perfect breeze for kite flying, and the Easter Bunny welcomed area kids to the Solon Optimist Club’s annual Easter egg hunt Saturday afternoon at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area (SRNA).
The event has been a Solon tradition since the 1970s said Joe Krob, President of the Solon Optimists, and remains free to the participants, who also were able to pick out a kite to take home as well. “This is one of the events we’re able to do by having fundraisers,” said Krob. “We’re able to buy the kites, buy bubbles (bubble making and launching tubes), and put out the eggs and fill them with candy.” It’s always a roll of the dice for the club in trying to gauge how many kites, etc. to have as there is no pre-registration. “It hasn’t happened yet, but I always have my fingers crossed that we don’t have so many kids we run out of kites and bubbles, and the ones clear at the back of the line who have waited the longest…and oops, nothing for you.”
The Optimists, with help from their junior affiliate, the Octagon Club, filled and deployed 3,060 plastic eggs (“255 dozen,” said Krob) for the event, which were snatched up within mere minutes. “It’s like a swarm of locusts, it does not take long.”
