GRINNELL —The WaMaC Conference meet was held Tuesday, March 19 at Grinnell College as the brief indoor track and field season neared its end ahead of the scheduled start of the outdoor (regular) season this week.
The Spartans set a new meet record as Eli Kampman, Brayden Moore, Rhett Mesch, and Grant Bumsted won the 1,600-meter distance medley relay in 3:44.33 breaking the previous record of 3:45.82 set by Clear Creek Amana in 2022. Nash Kotar earned himself a conference championship as he cleared the 60-meter hurdles in a winning time of 8.93.
Kaden Hoeper took second in the high jump (6-1), Ben Kampman was second in the shot put (53-0), Cole Carney was second in the hurdles just .05 seconds behind Kotar (8.99), and Michael Yeomans was second in the 800-meter run (2:05.03).
Brick Kabela was third in the 1600-meter run (4:33.05) and Grant Knipper was third in the 400 dash (54.43).
Knipper, Milo Ashbacker, Carney, and Kotar took fourth in the 4×200 in 1:36.95 while Rhett Mesch was fourth in the 60-meter dash (7.31).
Marcus Richard was seventh in shot (46-9), Brayden Moore was seventh in the 60 dash (7.44), Spencer Michels took eighth in the 1600 run (4:49.91), Ashbacker, Gavin Sieverding, Jordan Schmidt, and Charlie Brandt brought the 4×400 to an eighth place finish in 3:49.15 topping teammates Keenan Kruse, Michels, Wyatt Applegarth, and Kabela’s ninth-place showing in 3:49.54. Brandt was ninth in the hurdles (9.44), Eli Kampman was ninth in the 60 dash (7.47), with Kruse, Sieverding, Cole Farnsworth, and Schmidt taking 12th in the 4×200 in 1:41.62. Kaleb Behrends was 13th in shot (42-5), Schmidt was 14th in the long jump (17-8), Trevor Myers was 15th in shot (42-3.50), Ashbacker took 15th in the 60 dash (7.53), and Kaden Hoeper was 15th in the 200-meter dash (25.70). Noah Kottenstette was 16th in the 400 dash (1:00.29), Carter Grimm was 17th in shot (42-3), Benjamin Duckett was 17th in hurdles (9.84), Applegarth took 20th in the 1600 run (5:12.59), and Duckett was 22nd in the 200 dash (26.01).
