IOWA CITY — The League of Women Voters of Johnson County (LWVJC) in partnership with the League of Women Voters of Iowa and the Bertelsmann Foundation will host the Midwest premiere screening of the documentary I, Too Monday, March 25 at 7:00 p.m. at FilmScene at the Chauncey, 404 E. College St., Suite 100 in Iowa City as part of FilmScene’s Community Collaboration Series.
I, Too features Dr. Carol Anderson, New York Times bestselling author and Chair of African American Studies at Emory University. The film explores the connection between America’s history (through the lens of little-known episodes from the past), and the current challenges to American democracy. It examines the question, “Who could believe this could happen here?” regarding the January 6, 2021 “insurrection.”
The screening will be followed by a facilitated discussion led by Laura Gray, Executive Director of Diversity and Cultural Responsiveness for the Iowa City Community School District, and with panel members Ashley Howard and Bea Hicks. Howard is an Assistant Professor in the University of Iowa’s African American Studies while Hicks is a board member of the League of Women Voters of Johnson County and serves on the steering committee of the Johnson County Interfaith Coalition.
