AMES — The Solon Lady Spartans travelled to Ames Friday, March 8 to compete in the IATC State Indoor Championships hosted by Iowa State University. Future Cyclone Gracie Federspiel (Sr.) took home 3 medals as a partial squad scored 26.5 points to finish 9th in class 3A. The ADM girls won handily (as they did on the boys side), totaling 84.5.
The sprint medley relay got Solon on the board early. Freshman Avery Kellen teamed with sisters, Piper (So.) and Mia Stahle (Sr.), plus Federspiel to post a 1:53.5 time placing second to WaMaC foe Williamsburg.
Federspiel had a busy day following up with strong performances in the 200 and 400 meter dashes. She placed 4th in the 400 with a 59.57 clocking. Normally a 400/800 specialist, she dipped down to the sprints and placed 3rd with a 26.54 effort in the 200 meters.
Solon field event members added points in two events. Lilly Towne missed her PR by an inch, but jumped 4-9, good for 5th place. Shot putter Kate Shafer (Jr.) edged out teammate Abigail Felton (Sr.) for 8th place and one team point. Shafer notched a best effort of 32-7.75, while Felton had a best throw of 32-3, good for 9th.
The shuttle hurdle relay team of sophomore Trea Eidahl, junior Zoey Grimm, sophomore Cydney Jaster and Towne also brought home a medal. The foursome clocked the 6th best time in 43.09.
The Lady Spartans travel to Grinnell next week for the WaMaC Indoor Meet. Start time is 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 19 at the Bear Recreation and Athletic Facility on the Grinnell College campus.
