DES MOINES — The Solon High School and Middle School archery teams qualified for the Eastern Nationals Tournament, which will be held in Louisville, KY May 9-10. An estimated 2,300 students from more than 140 schools from across Iowa competed in the 18th National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) State Tournament at the Iowa State Fairgrounds Friday, March 1 through Sunday, March 3.
Male and female archers who placed in the top-ten within their division as individuals receive a guaranteed spot to participate in one of the national tournaments. Participants may choose to travel to the Western Nationals held in Sandy, Utah, April 26-27 or the Eastern Nationals held in Louisville, KY May 9-10. Team qualification is based on achieving a minimum score through a tiered registration process. Several Iowa teams qualified for the national tournaments.

Kassie Rummel from Solon High School was awarded a $1,000 scholarship (essay based) from the Haney Family Foundation.
High School results
The Spartans were fourth in Bullseye competition with a score of 3,341. Sergeant Bluff-Luton won with 3,363 followed by Valley (West Des Moines) High School (3,358), and Independence (3,356. Justin Moore led Solon with 289 and ranked ninth out of 428 high school boys, fourth out of 112 sophomores, and was 13th overall out of 1,131 boys. Andi Billerbeck was Solon’s leading girl with 286 and ranked 13th out of 383 high school girls, third out of 104 juniors, and 15th out of 810 girls.

Middle School results
Solon’s Middle School archers finished 13th as a team with 3,177 behind champion West Fork Elementary/Middle School (Rockwell) with 3,298 and runner up Independence (3,280). Center Point-Urbana (3,253), Mount Vernon (3.248), Prairie Point (Cedar Rapids) (3,213), Stilwell Jr. High (3,209), Spencer (3,206), Don Bosco (3,202), Garner-Hayfield-Ventura (3,201), Central DeWitt (3,200), Washington (3,197), and Atlantic (3,179).
Lincoln Schwartz led Solon with 282 ranking 11th out of 504 middle school boys, sixth out of 199 8th grade boys, and was 55th out of 1,131 boys. Carly Schmelzer was Solon’s leading girl with 268 ranking 50th out of 304 middle school girls, 27th out of 134 8th grade girls, and 217 out of 810 girls.
