DES MOINES — Four Spartan wrestlers qualified for this year’s Class 2A wrestling State Championships held last week at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Jordan Schmidt made his second trip to State after finishing seventh at 138 pounds last year while Charlie Karam, Jackson Feuerbach, and Lucas Feuerbach made their first State appearances.
Schmidt entered the tournament ranked seventh in 2A in IAwrestle’s final rankings of the 2023-24 season and punched his ticket to Des Moines with a 3-0 showing in the District 9 meet hosted by Solon on Feb. 10. In Des Moines Schmidt received a first round bye and took a 4-2 decision from Carroll’s Cael Nelson in the second round before winning in a tie breaker over Independence’s Kaden Kremer in the quarterfinals.
Schmidt faced a familiar opponent in the semifinals, Jase Jaspers from Mount Vernon. Jaspers had beaten Schmidt twice in the regular season but the Solon junior got the better of Jaspers with a 5-4 decision in the district meet. Jaspers held on for a 2-1 tie breaker, sending Schmidt to the consolation brackets. Shane Hanford of West Marshall took a 5-3 decision from Schmidt in the consolation semifinals but he came back to win a 4-3 decision in the fifth place match against Central Lyon/George-Little Rock’s Ragen Hasche. Schmidt finished the season at 48-8.
Charlie Karam, a junior, qualified at 132 pounds with a second-place finish in the district meet and took a 31-18 record into his first State Tournament. Karam fell to Kaiden Parker of Oskaloosa in the first round, received a bye in the first consolation round, and fell to Assumption’s Steele Diercks in the second consolation round.
Jackson Feuerbach, a junior, took second place at 165 pounds in the district meet to qualify for his first state appearance and had a 30-20 record. Feuerbach lost by decision to Central DeWitt’s Elston Lindner in the first round and received a first consolation round bye before Creston’s William Bolinger eliminated him with a 7-0 decision.
Lucas Feuerbach, a freshman, took second place at 215 pounds in the district meet and took a 40-8 record into his first State Tournament appearance. Feuerbach opened with a 12-1 major decision over Fairfield’s Dre Smithburg in the first round but fell to Mason Koehler of Glenwood in the second round, sending him to the consolation brackets. Feuerbach pinned Stryker Lettington of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in 1:47 in the second consolation round before being eliminated in the third by Brodie Van Regenmorter from Sioux Center.
Overall is was a weekend of ups and downs, said Coach Aaron Hadenfeldt. “That’s kind of what the state tournament is. I know we wish we had a couple matches back, but this is something we can build on. For Jordan, improving on his finish last year was big for him and I know he’s already looking forward to improving his finish next year. For Charlie, Jackson, and Lucas, it’s great for the experience and that’s what we’ll need. All four qualifiers return, plus another six that were one match away from the state tournament this year.”
Hadenfeldt added, “We’ve got a bright future, but we’ll need to put work in during the offseason to attain our goals. Thanks to all of our supporters throughout the year, especially the parents that help lead our program.”
