SOLON — In 1981 the Solon Area Community Foundation (SACF) was organized as a non-profit community service organization dedicated to building Solon’s future through providing grants to support youth and community projects. Past major project contributions have included $10k for the Solon Municipal Sign and time capsule (1984), $2.5k to begin grading at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area (1999), $25k toward the scoreboard at Spartan Stadium (2011), $30k toward the new Solon Firehouse (2019-’21), and $5k for renovations to the varsity baseball field (2021). Other donations have been for projects such as the Solon Splash Pad, the Iowa Veterans Outdoor Experience (IVOE), and to the Solon Historical Society for digitizing print editions of the Solon Economist. In addition, the SACF awards three $750 scholarships to Solon High School seniors annually as well as an annual $4k Doris Looney Memorial Scholarship.
The Solon American Legion Stinocher Post 460 became the latest recipient of SACF funds last Tuesday as Linda Linderbaum presented two checks totaling $12k for capital improvement projects.
$7k was donated for replacing the canopy across the front of the Legion building at 222 E. Main St. while $5k was donated toward the Avenue of the Flags at Oakland Cemetery.
“As a board member of the SACF, I am here this evening to say our board feels the Solon American Legion and Legion Auxiliary have a great impact on our Solon community,” Linderbaum told the Legion’s Board of Directors. “As well, we feel that some of your projects described to our board by Sgt. at Arms Denny Hansen will continue to do just that. As a board, we feel our donation toward these two projects will have a positive impact on our community.”
