A Note from the Principal
Where has January gone? I can’t believe we are in February already!
February is full of special events to keep our bodies moving and our energy up. Our hope is that we will continue to have some warmer weather and the snow will keep melting! Third graders will have their American Heart Association Heart Challenge kick-off assembly this month. We will have a little Valentine’s Day fun and then have our second round of parent/teacher conferences.

Sensory Motor Paths installed
During the January 19 professional learning day teachers worked with Grant Wood AEA occupational therapists to learn about sensory motor paths and integrating movement breaks into the school day.
Three sensory motor paths have now been installed in the building and are being utilized by our students every day. A sensory motor path is a series of guided movements that are depicted through markings on the ground and/or walls. As students use this path and complete the movements, they work off excess energy, develop gross motor skills, enhance visual perception skills, and gain sensory input.
100th Day of School
January 31 was the 100th day of the school year, and Lakeview students had fun celebrating and doing numerous activities centered around the number 100.
Mrs. Funke’s class – Mrs. Funke’s class was on the hunt for 100 Hershey’s kisses. Students had to find the corresponding number on the hundreds chart that matched the number on each kiss they found.
Ms. Kladivo’s class – Friends in Mrs. Kladivo’s class dressed up as if they were 100 years old.
Mrs. Green’s class – Friends in Mrs. Green’s class experienced some extremely quick aging for the 100th day (make up to resemble 100 years old).
Winter Reminders
As the weather continues to drop and we prepare for the potential for snow, please keep the following in mind:
• Recess is held outdoors as long as the real feel is 10 degrees or higher.
• Students can ALWAYS use encouragement to wear their coats, gloves, and hats outside.
• Please be sure to label all items with your child’s name. This will ensure that their items will get back to them if they happen to forget or misplace them in the building or on the playground.
• Recess will be hard surfaces only for students without snow pants and boots.

Character Strong Trait of the Month: Honesty
Overview – This month’s focus is Honesty.
One way to think about honesty is “being truthful in what you say and do.” Practicing honesty helps strengthen our relationships and even reduces stress.
Honesty is one of three traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Well. Across grade levels, students will be developing skills like emotion regulation, positive self-talk, and stress management.
Purposeful Pursuits – Have some fun connecting as a family this month while practicing honesty. Here are two “Purposeful Pursuits” you can complete together:
1. Review honesty as a family. Honesty is being truthful in what you say and do. Discuss the importance of being honest and work together to create a family honesty pledge. Create and decorate a sign together that explains what honesty means in your family. Have each family member sign the pledge and choose a spot to display it. Refer back to the pledge as a reminder to be honest and to celebrate when honesty is practiced.
2. Set aside some time to gather as a family and check in with each other. Ask each family member, “How are you feeling today?” Practice honesty when responding and listen carefully as each family member shares. Use the emotion check-in questions to learn more. Challenge yourselves to check in with each other on a regular basis.
Emotion Check-In Questions:
• Tell me more about that feeling.
• Why do you think you are feeling that emotion?
• What do you need right now?
