MOUNT VERNON — Eight Class 2A regional dual meets were held around the state last Tuesday (Jan. 30) with the No. 14-ranked Spartans facing No. 18 Columbus Community and No. 2-ranked Mount Vernon on the Mustangs’ mat. The Mustangs had a first round bye and faced the Spartans in the second round for the right to advance to the 2024 State Dual Meet Saturday (Feb. 3) at the Xtream Arena in Coralville where they were upset by No. 3 (and eventual 2A Champion) Creston 44-24. Mount Vernon had previously defeated Solon in a January 18 dual meet.

Kyler Steapp (120 lbs.) won a 6-4 decision over Ian Estudillo (Columbus), Charlie Karam (132) won 7-4 against Bowen Thomson (Columbus), Jordan Schmidt (138) won by technical fall (20-3) in 5:37 over Kohlby Newson (Columbus). Lawsin Sinnwell (144) pinned Cael Phillips (Columbus) in 1:42, Carson Kidwell (150) won 6-2 against Trevor Phillips (Columbus), Teague Williams won 4-1 against Cole Storm (Columbus), Jackson Feuerbach (165) pinned Tyson Kaalberg (Columbus) in 3:15, Kyler Jensen (190) won 7-1 against Riley Kaalberg (Columbus), and Lucas Feuerbach (215) pinned Cooper Buffington (Columbus) in 3:12.
Ty Scorpil (126) pinned Evan Burg (Solon) in 1:12, Kason Dopler (175) won a 9-1 major decision against Oliver Owens (Solon), Russel Coil (285) pinned Grant Wilson (Solon) in 23 seconds, Dakota Aney (106) pinned Jayden Steapp (Solon) in 36 seconds, and Jacob Nelson (113) pinned Justin Moore (Solon) in 1:15.

Burg (126) took a 4-0 decision from Drew Thurn (MV), Karam (132) won a 9-4 decision over Caleb Keegan (MV), Williams (165) won 4-1 against Cooper Hird (MV), Lucas Feuerbach (215) won 4-1 against Tyler Williams (MV), and Jayden Steapp (113) took a 5-2 decision from CJ Martin (MV).
Jase Jaspers (138) won 3-1 over Schmidt (Solon), Jackson Jaspers (144) pinned Sinnwell (Solon) in 2:00, Mikey Ryan (150) pinned Connor Dunn (Solon) in 1:10, Jackson Hird won a 10-1 major decision over Kidwell (Solon), Watson Krob (175) won 6-3 over Jackson Feuerbach (Solon), Kael Riniker (190) pinned Jensen (Solon) in 1:09, Ethan Wood (285) pinned Jamie Calef (Solon) in 1:10, Klayten Perreault (106) pinned Evan Gleason (Solon) in nine seconds, and Jake Haugse (120) pinned Kyler Steapp (Solon) in 1:53.
