TAMA — Winter showed up in all its ugliness last week postponing a non-conference game against the Mississippi Valley Conference’s (MVC) Iowa City West High Women of Troy (Monday) and a trip to Manchester to see the West Delaware Hawks (Friday). In between, the Lady Spartans were able to visit the South Tama Trojans Thursday and came away with an 86-16 blowout win.
Solon pounded the Trojans 23-2 in the first period and were up a commanding 51-6 at halftime. By the end of the third the Lady Spartans were up 77-12. Callie Levin led everybody with 24 points including four three-point baskets, Hailey Miller had a dozen, Mia Stahle produced ten, Kobi Lietz put up nine, freshmen Laney Johnson and Laeni Hinkle had six points each with five apiece from Anna Quillin and sophomore Delainey Durr. Maddyn Gates (freshman) had three points with two from sophomore Trea Eidahl. Quillin dominated the boards with ten rebounds backed up by Levin with nine.
Also last Thursday the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released their weekly rankings with Solon retaining the No. 1 spot in Class 3A followed by Mount Vernon in the No. 2 spot.
Coach comments
“We played well on both ends of the court,” said Coach Jamie Smith. “We were able to come out and get a lead and kept coming at them the whole game. Big team effort as we had 25 assists along with 27 steals. Again, a big team effort.”
Smith said the girls were looking forward to Tuesday’s visit from Mount Vernon (after this edition had gone to print). “(It) should be a great game as we have won nine-straight against them. I am sure they will be ready.” The Mustangs sat atop the WaMaC East at 7-0 and 11-1 overall to Solon’s 7-1/11-1 record.
