SOLON — The Lady Spartans celebrated Senior Night last Thursday (Jan. 11) with a 42-36 win over West Delaware. Kate Richards, Kendall Jensen, Morgan Rogers, and Addy Gerdes were recognized for their contributions to the Solon girls wrestling program, which is in its second year as a fully sanctioned sport.
Alexis Anderson (135 lbs.) pinned West Delaware’s Maliah Johnson (5:34), Olivia Bonnema (140) took a 10-4 decision from West Delaware’s Abigail O’Rear, Lucianna Miller (145) pinned West Delaware’s Lily Heim (2:53), Kara VeDepo (100) won a 7-3 decision over West Delaware’s Addison Schulte, McKenna Rogers (105) won by forfeit as did Emily Pence (110), and Richards (115) while Alannah Mahoney (120) pinned West Delaware’s Lexi Bunting (1:34).
Irelynd Hagarty (120) won an extra match against West Delaware’s Holly Gudenkauf with a pin in 1:33.
West Delaware’s Kylee Shoop (130) pinned Makayla Keller (1:47), West Delaware’s Parker Robinson (155) pinned Jensen (5:04), West Delaware’s Ella Goedken (170) and Kailey Burr (190) both won by forfeit, Haiden Wolfe (235) fell to West Delaware’s Samantha Murray (3:30), and Gabrielle Jedlicka (125) fell to West Delaware’s Anna O’Rear (0:40).
“We competed well winning some toss-up matches to secure the victory,” said Coach Jake Munson. “It has been great to see the improvement our girls continue to make week to week as we are wrestling our best heading into the final weeks of our season, and the postseason.”

Munson was presented with the National Federation of High School Sports (NFHS) 2022-2023 Iowa Coach of the Year for Girls Wrestling award.
Erin Gerlich, Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) Associate Director, noted “Each year, a coach is selected and honored by the National Federation of High School Sports in grateful appreciation of outstanding service and unselfish devotion to interscholastic activities. Coach Munson has been an integral component in building girls wrestling, not just in Solon, but across the state of Iowa. An original member of the IGHSAU Girls Wrestling Advisory Committee, Coach Munson has worked tirelessly to grow and legitimize this sport for females of all ages. He also serves as a President of the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association, where he also comes alongside new coaches and creates programming and resources. The IGHSAU and NFHS are grateful for the many opportunities that Coach Munson has created in the many ways he serves Girls Wrestling.”
