NEW SHARON — The varsity boys won the North Mahaska Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday with 230 points, well ahead of runner up Grinnell (169). The host Warhawks tied for third with Oskaloosa (140) with Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (EBF) rounding out the top-five (134.5).
Jayden Steapp won at 106 pounds going 4-0 on the day and pinning Pekin’s Reed Lauderman (1:32), Mount Ayr’s Jeremiah Gilliand in 45 seconds, Pella’s Hayden Rietveld (1:28), and EBF’s Garrett Pumphrey (1:34). Jordan Schmidt took gold at 138 with a 3-0 record pinning Lynnville-Sully’s Trevor Van Wyk (1:46), Grinnell’s Mikeal Miller (5:17), and Grinnell’s Matthew Mintle. Lucas Feuerbach won at 215 pounds with a 5-0 showing taking a 13-3 major decision from EBF’s Stryker Lettington and pinning Grinnell’s Caden Witham (3:38), Oskaloosa’s Jonah Devore in 20 seconds, Montezuma’s Braxton Plants (1:29), and North Mahaska’s William Goemaat in 21 seconds.
Carson Kidwell took second at 150 with an 11-5 decision over Pella’s Blake Six, a 6-5 decision over Oskaloosa’s Luke Abrahamson, and an 8-4 decision over North Tama’s Gavin Rausch before dropping a 6-2 decision to EBF’s Blake Johnson in the 1st place match. Jackson Feuerbach took second at 165 going 4-1 pinning Montezuma’s Evan Haughey in 31 seconds, Oskaloosa’s Brock Beerbower (1:30), Mount Ayr’s Bracken Collier (1:38), and North Mahaska’s Chris Long (1:49) before dropping a 5-1 decision to Grinnell’s Josh Ringler. Grant Wilson was second at 285 with a 3-1 showing pinning Montezuma’s Isaac Wedgewood in 35 seconds, Grinnell’s Sterling Dwyer in 58 seconds, and Pella’s Jackson Menke (5:55) before dropping a 4-2 decision to Baxter’s Aiden McFadden.
Lawsin Sinnwell placed third at 144 going 3-1 pinning North Mahaska’s Will Cox in 48 seconds, and EBF’s Nathan Curry (1:14) before falling to North Tama’s Kolt Knaack in the semifinals. Sinnwell pinned North Mahaska’s Hunter Wernli in the third place match. Teague Williams was third at 157 pinning Mount Ayr’s Tegan Hill in 58 seconds, dropping a 6-5 decision to North Mahaska’s Angello Wittenburg, and taking a 7-5 decision from Oskaloosa’s JT Baker (3rd place match). Kyler Jensen was third at 190 taking a 10-2 major decision from Grinnell’s Tyler Kostow, falling to Oskaloosa’s Parker Jordan in the semifinals (0:59), and pinning Iowa City High’s Jason Barrientos (0:51) in the 3rd place match.
Evan Burg placed fourth at 126 taking a 9-4 decision from North Mahaska’s Joel DeJong (quarterfinals) but falling to EBF’s Landen Davis in the semifinals and dropping a 10-0 major decision to North Tama’s Case Monat in the 3rd place match. Charlie Karam was fourth at 132 winning a 14-6 major decision over Pella’s Colby Putz (quarterfinals) but dropping a 6-1 decision in the semifinals to North Mahaska’s Ryan Groom and an 8-0 major decision to Grinnell’s Logan McDonald in the 3rd place match. Oliver Owens was fourth at 175 pinning Oskaloosa’s Maddox Maxwell in the quarterfinals (0:45), falling to Baxter’s Callyn Bishop in the semifinals, pinning Lynnville-Sully’s Wyatt Mathis (1:59) in the consolation semifinals, and falling to North Mahaska’s Max Reed in the 3rd place match.
Kyler Steapp was fifth at 120 pounds falling to EBF’s Gage Spurgeon in the quarterfinals, pinning North Mahaska’s Larry Daniels in 45 seconds (consolation round 2), pinning Lynnville-Sully’s Hunter Van Wyk (1:37) in the consolation semifinals, and winning a 15-3 major decision over Pella’s Brayden Van Horn in the 5th place match.
Justin Moore (113 pounds) did not place going 2-2 on the day pinning Grinnell’s Brycen Horras (5:07) and City High’s Ivan Galvan-Munguia in 51 seconds.
