Staff Favorites
of 2023
If there’s anything we love more than a good book, it’s being able to share recommendations with each other, patrons, and anyone who will listen! Here are a few of our favorites from 2023.
Alexis: Ancestor Approved by Cynthia Leitch Smith. Alexis liked the different perspectives of Native American children in today’s world. Find it at the Library and on the Libby App.
One of us is Dead by Jeneva Rose. While giving a mystery/thriller a try, Alexis enjoyed that this wasn’t too graphic, had funny scenes, and kept her guessing till the very end. Find it on the Libby App.
Alexis is also excited about our new memory care kit. This kit has games, puzzles, questions, and activities to help activate memories in older patrons. It will be helpful for dementia and memory loss patrons and their families to spur conversations. Available at the Library.
Erika: The Art Thief by Michael Finkel. A true story of love, crime, and a dangerous obsession. Available at the Library, and on the Libby App.
The Wager by David Grann. A page-turning story of shipwreck, survival, and savagery, culminating in a court martial that reveals a shocking truth. Find it at the Library, and on the Libby App.
The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese. Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. Find it at the Library, and on the Libby App.
Lily: A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers. This is a beautifully kind and philosophical book that follows the friendship between a tea-monk and a robot. Find it on the Libby App.
The Front Desk series by Kelly Yang. Following a middle school girl who dreams of being a writer while helping her immigrant parents run a California motel in the 90s, Lily loved how the characters grew and experienced the world around them as the series continues! Find it in the Junior Fiction section.
This Place: 150 Years Retold. Explore the past 150 years through the eyes of Indigenous creators in this groundbreaking graphic novel anthology. Beautifully illustrated, these stories are an emotional and enlightening journey through Indigenous wonderworks, psychic battles, and time travel. See how Indigenous peoples have survived a post-apocalyptic world since Contact. Find it in the YA Graphic Novel section.
